Swimming

2016

This section of the CAS threads is one of the most important for me. Since I was 5 years old, I have been competing in swimming. As a result, I have been representing Peru since 2011. This has made me live some incredible moments which have changed my life forever. All my hours for ACTIVITY will come from swimming as this year I will be representing Peru in the South American Open Championship, (Asuncion, Paraguay), Junior World Championship (Annemasse, France) and Copa Pacifico, which means I will be training a lot. My CAS supervisor will be Giuliana Belaunde (in the majority of ocasions) and in some it will be Sandra Crousse. Both of them are my coaches in "Regatas Lima".

The learning outcomes of this acticity will be:

LO1: Identify own strenghts and develop areas for growth

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

LO4: Show commitment to and preseverance in CAS experiences.

South American Open Championship

CAS supervisor: Sandra Crousse

The South American Open Championship took place from March 30th to April 3rd. As I said in a blog published last month, I had been training extensively so that I could have succesfull results in this competition (300 hours claimed for this section of the activity) (LO4).

Also training a lot was important because I had not trained breastroke for over 4 years. This meant that my technique was weak and my body was not used to the movements. By the end of the summer, I had improved a lot and I was ready to compete. (LO2)

We arrived a fue days before the competition started so that we could adapt to the different time, climate and pool. Our usual day was to wake up in the morning, train, eat lunch, hang out with our friends, train again, then eat dinner and go to sleep.

This changed when the competition started. We had to warm up, compete, eat even more times a day, be focused on the competition, sleep on every ocasion possible, etc.

The preparation of the day before my competition was:

  1. Drink a lot of water to get rid of lactic acid

  2. Lossen up muscles with massages :)

  3. Increase speed with short sprints

  4. Sleep

  5. Carbo-load (every swimmers wish)

The big day, I had to remind to myself that everything I had done during the summer was to achieve this and the results would come on their own. There is nothing you can do now, except mental preparation, that will change how you will swim.

I warmed up, changed and while waiting for the judges to call my name, I focused on what I wanted to achieve, how I wanted to swim, etc. Thinking of every detail that could make me have an advantage over my competitors.

Finally, they called my name and we headed to the starting blocks. I feel the adrenaline building up inside of me as the race started.

When I got to the end, I looked up and saw that I had decreased my time. Before I had 35.46 in 50mts Breastroke but now I did 35.25. This is a huge difference as improving your time in 50mts is very difficult.

The next days, I had no other competitions until my coach told me time trails were going to be available. Although I could not compete against other swimmers, my times would be valid.

I decided to sign up for 50mts and100mts freestyle and 200mts breastroke. On the three ocaisons, I improved my times. From 28.9 I dropped to 27.9 in the 50mts freestyle, in the 100mts freestyle I dropped from 1.02.33 to 1.00.76 and in the 200mts breastroke from 3.25.13 to 3.02.16.

I was very happy about my results as my hard job and sacrifices during the summer had succeded. This motivates me even more to continue training as there is still place for improvement as I am young and my technique is not perfect. (LO1)

There were also factors that push me to continue swimming. For example, many olympic swimmers and wolrd champions also swam in the competition. Just by looking at them, their times and seeing how they can achieve the A-cut for the olympics 2016 makes one think that they can also achieve it if you put all your effort and dedication to it.

Also the experience itself, of travelling with your friends, meeting new people, getting to know other cultures, makes you want to travel more often, and to do this you have to be the best.

I hope that in my next competitions I carry on improving my times as I did in this South American Open Championship because it will lead me to achieve greater things.

14th Finswimming Junior World Championship

CAS Supervisior: Giuliana Belaunde

From the 2 of July until the 12th, I was in Annemasse, France competing in the 14th Finswimming Junior World Championship. This was the first time that I would go to compete all by myself, only accompanied by my coach (Giuliana Belaunde). Last year I had competed in the Panamerican Games in Colombia and I had won three silver medals, improving my personal bests. However, for this competition I proposed to myself that I would improve my times once again and try to get into a final. (150 hours claimed for this section of the activity)

For this competition my training suddenly became harder than expected because my legs were not used to the lactic acid created from the fins. For the first few weeks it became very hard to complete the meters I needed to swim but it became easier each day. Still, I had some back luck one month before competing which totally shocked me. (LO2)

My back had started to hurt a few days before so I decided to go to the doctor to check what had occured and when I got there, they informed me I had to do therapy, stop swimming and recover. If I was unable to achieve this, they would not let me go and compete. I did everything I could until the day arrived and the doctor told me I was going to be able to go.

The 30th of June was all about geeting prepared to go to the competition: packing my bags, checking I had all my equipment, etc. I was very nervous because it was going to be the first time I every traveled alone, only accompanied by my coach. When we got to Netherlands, I became extremely happy because first, I had never been there and second because we were now close to our destination.

We wondered through the airport, until our flight was called. We arrived at Geneva where people from the association picked us up and we were taken to our hotel. Luckily, Colombia was also staying in the same hotel so I was able to see all my friends. Japan, Turkey, Germany and Greece were also staying there and by the end of the trip, we had all become friends.

In the afternoon, we went to recognize the pool and it has been one of the greatest locations I have ever competed in. It was fast, the starter blocks were modern and everything was well distributed. We trained a little bit so that I could be ready for the competition the next day. At night, we attended the official opening ceremony which was organized by the "Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques". It involved tipical music and dances from France and it motivated all the participants to do their best in the following competitions.

During the tournament, I swam 50, 100 and 200 meters bifins. I was very happy with my results as I managed to decrease my times but also because I ranked very high in my competitions. However, I was not able to make it to a final but this has been a motivation as my next goal is to compete, make it to a final and maybe win a medal. (LO1)

Additionally, the experience has allowed me to grow as I learned to control my nerves in a very high demanding environment so when I came back to national competitions, it has been much easier to compete. Also, friends from other countries that won medals taught me techniques and key points I should take into consideration when training. This has been beneficial because they have much more experience on this discipline than me. The past few weeks of training here in Peru, I have implemented these tips and will continue to do so in the next years. (LO4)

Once again, the friendships I have made have taught me valuable lessons and they are always proof that countries, borders and languages will never be a barrier for people who share the same passion.
